Make my dream a reality and travel Ontario to give drama therapy workshops.

Why is my passion Drama Therapy

Drama therapy is a form of art therapy that includes the manipulation of the body, masks, and inner self. While most art therapy focuses on the freedom of expression be it through painting or other mediums, drama therapy goes a bit further by tapping into the unconscious (PositivePsychology, 2020). By following the little dance in your gut, and allowing yourself to be the movements, emotions can be released from the subconscious. Drama therapy can improve interpersonal relationships, emotional and physical well-being, and overall quality of life. These positive behavioral changes can allow a person to become self-aware and improve their emotional health (PositivePsychology, 2020). When I tell people that I want to pursue a career in drama therapy I receive a lot of raised eyebrows. But here is why I am so passionate about this. Theatre has always been a passion of mine because I can become someone different, forget the stresses of everyday life and focus on the character I've been given. However, I have always been interested in the psychology of things. So this got me thinking… How could I incorporate both? I got my answer when I took my first clown class. Throughout that year, I have found that by utilizing my body and mind not as a different character but as an extension of myself. I can find similarities in the characters I play, but I became interested in another method that creates a character from within. In psychological terms, we create from our experiences and our genetics. This is observed when doing clown as our clown would be the element of yourself that we might not be aware of.  It's important to know that this perspective on drama therapy is in fact based on my experience with theatre and from my research on drama therapy, but the way people experience it could be different. However, I truly believe that if people allow themselves to indulge in their own bodies instead of their minds, the truth about themselves will be revealed, and I will be there to help them move through this process. I connect drama therapy to art therapy done by the Mushkegowuk council in Timmins because the art therapist Ericka is the one who helped me realize that I could incorporate theatre and psychology and that there is already a name and practice for it… drama therapy. So I always think of how I first came to know about drama therapy. I also highly connect it to clown as there are many similar techniques. With that being said, I would love to explore the world of clown in drama therapy as clown is my favorite medium in theatre. My all-round goal is to create a version of drama therapy that includes clowning, and also aspects of Indigenous culture to be able to create culturally safe workshops for Indigenous communities. In all, drama therapy is a unique outlet to heal and express emotions that could otherwise be difficult to express. By using mediums such as masks, body movement, clowning, group work, and inner-self work, a person could experience and or create a character that comes from the essence of oneself. Drama therapy can be the answer to improving your quality of life such as, self-confidence and relationships, by exploring self-awareness through the body and spirit (Good Therapy, 2015).
